Great reference book. I bought the second edition and it featured lots of unlike writing styles, including essays by installation and performance artists.
I definitely referred to this volume many times during my undergrad in fine arts. The big size was daunting at first, but one time I became familiar with some of the artists I referred to it more and more frequently. As a developing creative person it was useful being able to read how artists describe their ain work and idea processes, and covers a diverseness of artists over time (some are nonetheless practicing today).In the absence of contemporary fine art "canon" postal service 2000, I'd really love to see an updated version

Wow! And whew! An extremely comprehensive await at a menstruum of art with examples of writing and interviews with many, many artists.
Big, thick and a lot of data, but well worth the few months it took to read.
Good interviews, but it is more often than not painters. Very narrow view of contemporary art when information technology comes to mediums. Good source book for directly writings from the artists though.
